Activity of Volcán de Colima

Activity of 2011-04-01 - 2011-04-30

There are signs of a decrease in the eruption rate with a drop off in the number of rockfalls occurring. This is the first clear decrease noted since the current episode commenced in January 2007. The number of explosions is also decreasing. Quite what this means is difficult to forecast after such a sustained period of fairly constant activity.

The months continue to advance with little change in the characteristics related to the effusive eruption of the volcano. The dome remains the same size with all new lava forming on the western lobe. No significant volume of lava can sustain itself for very long on this steep flank, which results in the frequent rockfalls. Current research includes an analysis of the rockfall volumes using different techniques: quantifying the volume of dome lost, the thermal emissions from the rockfall and the seismic signal.
